Dr. Karim El-Samra. DMD
Dr Karim El-Samra, is a general dentist. He obtained his Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the University of Montreal in May 2001, with mention of clinical excellence. He completed a year of multidisciplinary residency at the New York Hospital Of Queens in 2002.Upon his return to Montreal, he worked as an associate in a few clinics until 2008, when he became co-owner and co-founder of the Floss dental clinic in Hawkesbury, Ontario, an ultra-modern clinic, which he and his business partner, Dr Karim Khalifé, had built with the help of the Surface 3 design company.
Floss Dental Clinic operates with great success and after five beautiful years, he transerred his share of the clinic to his business partner, to pursue his dream of having his solo practice close to his home in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. Indeed, the distance between Floss and his residence in Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, was in conflict with his values of environmental responsibility and his quality of life. So a win-win deal gives his partner full control of Floss, and gives him the freedom to build the D Dental Office in Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, in October 2013.
Dr El-Samra continues to perfect his knowledge through carefully chosen continuing education courses.
Since 2012, Dr El-Samra also started to take an interest in nutrition. His interest gradually became a passion. Listening to the documentary Forks Over Knives became a turning point in his life. He began to research and become familiar with the concept of “Lifestyle Medicine”. He begins to discover the scientific principles that help people, halt or avoid the most common chronic diseases, such as heart disease (atherosclerosis), certain cancers, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and to avoid serious consequences like aneurysms, embolisms and stroke.
In fact, according to experts in Lifestyle Medicine, most of these diseases are preventable by adopting certain lifestyle habits. Surgical techniques and pharmaceutical prescriptions help control certain conditions and occupy an important place in modern medicine. But, they don’t reverse chronic disease. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits, on the other hand, is scientifically proven to do so.
Studies by Dr Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. And Dr Dean Ornish, for example, have shown that heart disease, our number one killer, can be reversed, by adopting a whole foods plant-based nutrition and other healthy habits. Since Dr El-Samra discovered this fact, he has become more and more interested in these concepts and has started to adopt this lifestyle himself, since heart disease is rife in his family. His father died at 46 from this disease and several members of her paternal family are suffering from it.
In addition, it is now well established that periodontal disease (gum disease) is strongly linked to heart disease and they are both reversible or preventable by adopting healthy lifestyle principles. All other efforts are ineffective or futile if the foundation of these principles is ignored. Dr. El-Samra will be happy to share his knowledge with you and if needed, refer you to the right professionals who can help you improve your health and quality of life.
« The first duty of a healthcare professional is to coach and inform their patients that our health is largely in our own hands and that we don’t have to be forever dependent on drugs and medical procedures, in the vast majority of cases. »Dr Karim El-Samra
