What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to remove bacteria from the inside spaces that get infected due to deep cavities. A well-performed root canal treatment disinfects the inside of the tooth, saves it from extraction and relieves the pain it causes. This process, also known as endodontic treatment, includes removing the inflamed or infected pulp (dental nerve), carefully cleaning and disinfecting the tooth’s interior, then filling and sealing it.

Who needs a root canal?

Root canals are required for a fractured tooth or traumatized tooth, a deep cavity, or a previous filling issue that involves the inside spaces of the tooth. A root canal is usually needed when a tooth is extremely sensitive or painful, particularly to hot and cold sensations, or even to pressure. You know that you need a root canal treatment when you have:

  • Severe pain while chewing or biting.
  • A tooth that shows signs of infection.
  • A tooth that has a crack that involves its inside spaces.
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts several minutes or more.
  • Swollen or tender gums caused by an infection discovered to be originating from the inside of a tooth.
  • Deep decay or darkening of the tooth.

What makes a root canal treatment successful?

Endodontic treatment requires high precision and rigour. If the internal space of the tooth is not thoroughly disinfected and adequately sealed, the same problems might resurface.

The success of the root canal depends on several factors. It is essential to find all the canals as a molar can have up to four of them, and rarely even five.

At the D Dental Office, we use the most advanced imaging technologies and state-of-the-art equipment to get you the best results and completely treat your affected tooth in the most efficient and comfortable way.
